Here’s the exact process I now use with every student:

1. Immediate Verbal Summary (2 minutes)

I start with what went well before touching weaknesses. This matters psychologically???people are more receptive to criticism after hearing affirmation.

“Here are the three strongest parts of your design: You clarified requirements thoroughly upfront, you proactively discussed trade-offs without prompting, and your whiteboard organization was exceptionally clear.”

2. The Red Flag Check (5 minutes)

  • Did I make quick decisions on trivial choices and save time for important ones?
  • Did I complete the core design (high-level arch, data model, API, scaling)?
  • Did I start broad then go deep (not deep too early)?
  • Did I respond to time signals from the interviewer by adjusting priorities?
  • Did I use clear transitions and summaries between topics?
  • Did I leave 5-10 minutes for interviewer questions?
  • Did I iterate on my design when issues arose (not start over)?

If you checked fewer than 5/7: Practice with a timer. Set alarms at 10, 25, and 40 minutes and force yourself to transition topics regardless of where you are.

How to Use This Self-Assessment

After each mock interview:

  1. Complete the full assessment: Be brutally honest with yourself
  2. Identify your weakest category: Which section had the lowest score?
  3. Pick ONE red flag to fix: Don’t try to improve everything at once

Background: Rajesh, a backend engineer with 6 years of experience at a mid-sized SaaS company, failed his first Meta phone screen. His technical skills were strong, but he exhibited Red Flag #29???extended silence during design thinking.

  4. Justify each addition: “We’re introducing sharding because our write load exceeds what a single database can handle, despite the operational complexity it adds.”

The result: Sarah went from 3 rejections to 2 FAANG offers (Amazon L5, Google L4) within 6 weeks. Her Amazon interviewer noted: “Demonstrated excellent judgment by right-sizing the solution and showing clear evolution path.”

She learned that senior engineering isn’t about using the most sophisticated technologies???it’s about using the simplest solution that meets requirements.

Case Study 3: Michael???The Requirements Blind Spot

Background: Michael was a staff engineer at a 200-person startup with strong technical depth. He struggled with FAANG interviews despite his seniority. After our third mock interview, I identified the core issue: Red Flag #1???jumping to solution without clarifying requirements.

  • “What’s more important: consistency or availability during failures?”

Phase 3???Constraints and Priorities (1 minute):

  • “Are there cost constraints, or should I optimize purely for performance?”
  • “If I had to rank consistency, availability, and latency, what’s the priority order?”

I made Michael spend exactly 5 minutes on this phase in every practice session, regardless of how eager he was to start designing.

The result: Within 6 weeks, Michael received a Google L5 offer. The interviewer feedback specifically mentioned: “Exceptional requirements clarification???asked all the right scoping questions upfront, which led to a well-reasoned design.”

Michael’s technical skills hadn’t changed. But now he was designing the right system instead of his assumption of the system.
